Installation of artworks in the community

Discover Kraainem naturally focuses on the architectural heritage of the municipality. We are also very much committed to promoting local artists. As part of this, we have already overseen the installation of several works of art in the municipality, in collaboration with the local council. At present, this involves the following two works:

  • ‘The Crucifixion’ by Antoine de Vinck. On Sunday 23 March 2025, Antoine de Vinck’s ‘The Crucifixion’ was festively unveiled in St Dominic’s Church in Kraainem. The artwork was generously donated by the de Vinck family to mark the exhibition celebrating the centenary of Antoine de Vinck’s birth. The work now has a permanent place in our lovely parish. The inauguration was brought to a festive close with a drink offered by Discover Kraainem.

  • ‘Female Torso’ by Philippe Desomberg (1945–2021). This artwork was donated by the artist’s sister, together with the plinth designed specifically for this piece by Desomberg himself. ‘Female Torso’ is currently on display in the Agora garden. Mayor Bertrand Waucquez officially unveiled the artwork on 4 October 2025. Desomberg creates human figures that emerge from the raw material, thus illustrating the moment of creation. Yet they are ‘incomplete’ and marked by ‘absence’: this is characteristic of the artist and bears witness to existential anguish. We cannot help but refer to his date of birth in post-Second World War Europe, which was still in ruins. Yet these figures radiate beauty. Philippe Desomberg takes great care with the finish of the surfaces, which are patiently covered with tiny raised lines that you feel compelled to touch. This project ties in seamlessly with the centenary of sculptor and ceramist Antoine de Vinck, which we celebrated with an exhibition in 2024. There is thus a fine continuity in the promotion of artists from Kraainem.
