Walk through northern Kraainem
This walk focuses on the northern part of the municipality, where Kraainem originated.
We set off from St Pancratius Church, first visiting ‘High-Kraainem’ and the Jourdain area, before walking via the Kleine Maalbeek river to ‘Low-Kraainem’ and the river Woluwe. Water and – in this case – the old Roman road, with its passage through the area, ensured that a residential centre emerged which was reasonably well-populated. We assume the existence of a maintained ford, through which traders and travellers could pass, as well.
With the help of historical maps, old photographs and postcards, we will bring the past to life and discuss the steps that led to the current street plan.
Guided tour of St Pancratius Church and St Anthony’s Church
A tour inside two listed buildings, symbols of tradition and innovation.
In St Pancratius, church, with its Romanesque tower, Gothic choir and nave completed in 1770, you will be taken on a journey through the centuries.
St Anthony’s Parish takes you back to the vibrant atmosphere of Expo ’58 and ‘Joyful Belgium’: in 1958, this chapel epitomised futuristic architecture.
Guided tour of the Henri-Jaspar Residence
The Henri-Jaspar Institute is situated right on the border between Kraainem and Tervuren. This building was originally conceived as a sanatorium for children in poor health. Discover Kraainem was invited to present its rich historyon the occasion of its completed renovation. Guided tours of this private site are still organised on a regular basis.
A walk through the Bouvier-Washer garden district
Join a bilingual guided tour to discover the Bouvier-Washer garden district from a new perspective, based on recent archival discoveries.
This neighbourhood of 40 cottage-style houses, designed by the architect Fernand Delbrassinne, was built in 1923–1924 and provided accommodation for soldiers disabled in the Great War. It bears the marks of tragic events, bears witness to a philanthropic impulse and revives the memory of an eventful family history.
Guided tour of the Visitation Convent
The Visitation Convent on the Hebronlaan in Kraainem is an architecturally fascinating building. Discover Kraainem has already been granted special permission by the owners on several occasions to organise guided tours in 2023 and 2025.
